FACT 134 – librarything

i own a g1, why should i have to buy a barcodescanner/cuecat in order to put my (extensive) library on librarything? WHY? if i were a coder, i wouldn’t be having this problem. if -ing shelves would -ing come out, i wouldn’t be having this problem. (^_^) if i knew what to do with this: import android droid = android.Android() code = droid.scanBarcode() isbn = int(code[‘result’][‘SCAN_RESULT’]) url = “http://books.google.com?q=%d” % isbn droid.startActivity(’android.intent.action.VIEW’, url) (from matt cutts’s blog) i wouldn’t be having this problem. etc. in my ideal world, someone would mashup Barcode Scanner and Librarything’s API, and my life would proceed to the awesome phase. … okay, during the 45 minutes i’ve been writing this entry (slow? me? what?) i’ve found a solution! ScanPaste + Barcode Scanner + Librarything’s bulk add = about five more steps than should have to occur, but i WILL have my library on librarything! i WILL! p.s. i’m notuboc on librarything. come say hi! .

FACT 133 – crazy

aw, i’ve been featured in a blog~ and a damn nice-lookin’ one, too. (^_^) http://handboundweekly.blogspot.com/ almost makes me wanna re-design my blog. almost. (^_^) i did my sister’s, though! now her blog matches her silkfair shop! and it ain’t bad, if i do say so myself. my own lowly blog-a-blog matches my store as well, ps. so now there’s two different places you can buy my happy books, either silkfair or etsy~ … okay, i’m sure i had more to write about that, but the fact is that i’m watching the happiness of the katakuris, and the fact is that neither the wikipedia article nor the imdb summaries gives even the slightest hit to the incredibly crazydistracting power of this movie. it is, in short, fucked. .

FACT 132 – i should be writing right now

but of course i’m not. i have a 7 page paper due in about a week, and i’ve got a 8-10 minute presentation due, uh, day after tomorrow (!) and although i’ve done plenty of research, i have yet to actually write the paper or make the presentation, so instead of actually working on my school work, i’ve been fixing up my silkfair shop page: yup, that’s me, hanging out on the front page! here’s the shop a little closer up: doesn’t it look SUPER awesomes! i know! i love this whole Custom Store thing. i haven’t made a single sale on silkfair yet, but i’m starting to like it even more than etsy. *gasp* how could i say such a thing! well, not that i don’t like etsy, but i’m sensing more and more “sale” from etsy, whereas silkfair still seems to have that indie streak that i so covet. not that i didn’t have to pay for the custom shop priviledge, but i like that silkfair is willing to give up control over their “brand” so to speak, in order to help me further my business. i’m sure i’ll keep my shops on both sites, but the “books” link above points you to my silkfair shop, not my etsy shop. it just looks better. (^_^) in other news, i’ve got an update on my goals thread from the NaNo boards. several goals down, slightly less than fifty thousand to go… things to Finish: college – still on schedule! (account hold removed, meeting with graduation advisor immenent!) – english 565 (workshop II) | done! – anthropology 597 | right on target. paper to be written tonight, presentation to be given thursday~ – summer/fall classes | got into fiction workshop II for the fall, scheduled summer class (rhetoric. yay.) bills (this one’s still big (T_T) ) – mastercard (hereafter known as The Rape Lady) | ZOMG DONE! yaaay!!! – discovercard | aka rape lady nouveau. payments scheduled, will be done in october! – car! | 4 payments left, payments also done in october! (yellow and black smart car with little stripes still on the horizon!) – tuition payments (ouch) | still late, but now significantly more late. i think they qualify for a capital L now. Late. crafts – replica of the national treasure 2 president’s book for my fav customer in the UK | holy lord am i still working on this? shouldn’t it be done by now? – 20 books made for a church choir outing this weekend. | done. everyone loved it, and it got me a commission for 15 similar books for the discese of southern ohio diaconate’s ordination. due june 7… our fridge died, but we got a new one, and for free, from our priest (yay churches!) and it’s beautiful and wonderful and even has a built-in ice maker (wow, we’re so bourgeois now~). my summer class wasn’t exactly what i wanted, but i should just be thankful that i got anything at all, given the difficulty i had removing the hold from my university account. (^_^) el ciao, ~meredeth. -promises to go write her paper now. promise.

FACT 132 – ill health

just because it’s mental doesn’t mean it’s not considered ill health. so i took the day off today. after a horrendous day yesterday, this one seemed to be going alright for a while anyway. today’s Bad Thing isn’t really horrendous, but it’s still annoying. in other news… well. more Annoying, i guess. i’ve got a stack of pages to read for my paper (7 pgs + 15 min presentation, due in a week) that’s i’ve yet to read. i”m writing my paper on patent law, specifically, the patenting of human genes and their relationship to continued research on the genome. sparked by a NOVA episode on the human genome project with robert kurlwich actually. because mr krulwich is awesome. in other news, photodump: i signed up for a twibe the other day (this would be a group of twitter people, for those of you who have managed to keep yourselves clean from the twitter menace) for etsy people, and i turned out to be the 667th member. i was so sad! i could have been the devil member! (T_T) this is the media pc i built for us here at the beckett household. most of the parts were already lying about the place. i bought… a wireless card ($20), and a (marginally) bigger hard drive ($45) and voila la media pc~ so what was the first thing i did on it? played lufia 2 because of NERd. speaking of NERd: this is with most (not all!) of our computers in the house on. i think this is all of them that connect to the internet anyway. as you can see, we’re a little odd about our naming conventions. our wifi is called Battle of the Rhine. (^_^) going back in time a little, these are the books i made for our little thrift shopping excursion. they were a big hit. actually, i just got a thank you card from our priest (who went along for the ride). it had a nice little piece of handmade paper with some leaf/fern/somethings in it. she’s so nice! this is what they looked like on the table. so colorful! and as proof that i am actually doing something bookbinding-related in amongst all this other bullshit: this is a block of newsprint i bought from u-haul. eh? what the bleeding hell has that got to do with bookbinding, you ask? i’m making a replica of the presiden’t book from national treasure 2, and i need to print out a bunch of the newspapers that were included, cheifly among these of course is the dallas morning whatever from kennedy’s date with destiny. (^^;) i bought a reprint of it (shipping was more than the actual paper (X_X) ) and scanned it in, thinking to print it out and artificially age it, but then i realized, i don’t have anything that can print more that 8.2 inches wide (if you include print margins, the damn things). the u-haul paper is 20 by 27 inches, so i’ll have to cut it down to normal newspaper size, but that still leaves the Printer Problem. my current plan is to employ some creative folding methods (which sounds like creative accounting methods, and is morally quite similar) to make it fit through my printer. in the meantime, however, it’s back to reading that stack of crap for my paper. god i can’t wait to be done with this junk so i can get back to bookbinding, i miss it. (T_T)

FACT 131 – as yet untitled

alternate title = i super need a retractable katana! that’s right, the fam and i went to see the star trek movie. it was good! not, like, memento good, or like, i don’t know, intellectually good, but seriously, shit blew UP in that movie, bones? was super awesome in that movie, spock? i can’t even tell you how good spock was, because if i did, i’d spoil the plot. that’s how good spock was in that movie. now, granted, i’m a pretty big trekkie. my sister actually can quote line from voyager, which is like, i barely even remember that series, let alone can quote from it. my father used to write star trek fan fiction back in the days when the next generation was on. it’s pretty much star trek and MASH that have formed my opinion of language, humor, and how to use them, and so when i say that the new star trek movie is awesome, i think we have to take it as a given that i’m about sixteen times more biased than the next guy, but still. awesome. the other awesome thing, as i have previously related, is my getting into the fiction workshop class for the fall. i have subsequently released the story to romp on the internets, and you may find it available for your reading (hopefully) pleasure here: Joachim, as yet untitled -delta revision-. it got me into a class, so i’m expecting that it doesn’t suck too hard core, but i’ve been told by several (dozen) people that it could use some more world building. i’m wondering what sort of details of the world you’d like to have, what questions about the world specifically were generated when you read it. of course if you loved it, i’d like to know that too. (^_^) no, seriously, while it’s never been especially difficult for me to see where i suck, i’m not so great at pointing to things i do well. if you liked something, tell me. also, my ego would appreciate some niceness mixed in with the “you suck” -ness. nota bene: http://www.pbs.org/video ftw.

mobiboc c

well, screnzy was a big ol’ FAIL. super annoying. on the other hand, i have finished my super revision of Joachim. that’s right, my story from like three months ago, and i finally revised it. i never really put it down, and then i didn’t have anything really to hand to submit for the fall fiction workshop class. so i set about reducing the suck. apparently i succeeded, because i got an email the next day saying i was in. it also said that she’d be forwarding a reading list in case any of us wanted to get a head start over the summer. i’m desperately curious what sort of reading list there could even be for a fiction workshop class. i need that list as soon as possible. (^_^) also, i’ll put my revision up here when i get home for anyone who’s interested. i’ll probably submit it to dA, too, but really i need to start writing some stuff for proseplease. i’ve got a bunch of old prompts to finish up. most of them i already have ideas for, i’ve just gotta write the dern things. there is one that’s been stumping me for a long while, but i haven’t stopped thinking about that one either, so eventually it’ll come to me. anyhow, it’s back to doing my work for me, i just wanted to drop in and say hi. oh and also that i built myself a rockin’ media pc and that it is sucking my time down a dark dark hole. .

Screnzy 09, Day 28 – super lose

technically, i probably have no business filing this under Screnzy 09, since i’m 17 pages in, and don’t expect to progress any further. i feel like every other moment of my life is complaining that school doesn’t leave me with any time to do anything, but a) it really doesn’t, and b) i’m a prose writer, not a doctor, jim– er, i mean, not a script writer. nanowrimo? won. four times in a row now. script frenzy? lost. three years in a row now. last year? i didn’t even start, that’s how much i lost. (T_T) BUT! all is not lost. i have a seriously rockin’ idea, and i do plan on finishing the screen play, despite my super lose. i’m writing a fake documentary about the first people to build an android so human-like that he fools the world, and the emotional/ethic aftermath thereof. and i’ve also decided that i could do a companion novel for NaNo! many documentaries have companion novels and vice versa, so in this way, Screnzy was warm-up/planning for NaNo~ yeah. (T_T) in other news, australia loves me. (^_^) well, not the whole of australia, that’s a large continent, and much of it is only inhabited by kangaroos and … dingos? mammals that i have yet to conquer with my unimaginable wit and dangerous intellect anyway. (wow i’m in rare form this evening, ne? i’d tell you all about how mussled my sleep schedule is right now, but frankly, the internet’s not that big.) anyhow. this morning on my way to class, i got the nicest email from a lady in australia about how useful (and hysterical!) she found my temari tutorial on da! (p.s.? that thing is freaking LONG! i just re-read it, and i’d like to say a) it takes a good 45 minutes just to read the thing, nevermind reading it while actually doing it, and b) i must have been in a super good mood when i wrote that thing. i need to do more of those.) p.s. the brandenburg concerto has a super cute oboe part. .

Screnzy 09, Day 17 – from the goal list

one goal down, about fifty thousand to go… things to Finish: college – still on schedule! still issues with the accounts receivable department (er, ! i guess) – english 565 (workshop II) | done! – anthropology 597 | right on target. turned in abstract on time, signed up for a presentation date next month. – summer/fall classes | deadline to turn in story for entrance into fiction workshop for the fall is the first week of may, so i need to get on that, but other than than, i just need to pay the bloody college on time, and pick a class from the english dept’s offerings at random for the summer~ bills (this one’ll be big (T_T) ) – mastercard (hereafter known as The Rape Lady) | second-to-last payment made today!!! – discovercard | probably should call them at some point before they sue me… (T_T) – car! | 6 payments left! (smart car will still be yellow and black with little stripes!) – tuition payments (ouch) | a little late, but nothing to get overly concerned about. still ouch, though. crafts – replica of the national treasure 2 president’s book for my fav customer in the UK | binding structure GOT, some inserts GOT, more inserts to get, and some cheap leather to pick up at the thrift store this weekend. – 20 books made for a church choir outing this weekend. can’t wait to see people’s reactions~ – cleaning up my craft space? | despite my best intentions, this did happen. a little bit anyway. got more storage, organized a bit. actually, i like it. i need a dedicated space. that would make me very happy. moving out in 2010 still set, i got the other set of legs for my desk, so i’m pretty sure i don’t need anything else for my apartment besides groceries and things i can’t actually buy too far ahead of moving in. some pots and pans, i guess. things are heating up at work. i had some training for that culinary group i mentioned last time, so now i know what i’ve gotten myself into at least… (T_T) it’s pretty much like, no one really understands the rules, no one knows who to refer the cases to for some kind of actual medical review, and the rules themselves are either a) non-existant, b) contradictory, or c) hideously unclear. since i’m the callback staff, i.e. i’m the one who’s going to have to figure this stuff out, i’ve decided to take it upon myself to read every rule at least once. i copied a bunch of em into a file for my later perusal, and i shall be perusing them this weekend. we were supposed to have a training session today all together, but that didn’t happen because one of our girls was out, so i just got the training specific for my job. which is fine, i think we have a good basic idea of how things are supposed to go, i guess i’m just worried because i found out a big thing this afternoon about which nurses we’re supposed to be transferring people to, i.e. i found out that i’ve been doing it wrong for about a month now and no one has bothered to tell me, and so i’m kind of wondering what other things i’ve been doing completely wrong. I DON’T LIKE WRONG. and pardon me for being anal, but i am of the opinion that one should not have to look at two different pieces of paper in addition to the system itself to be able to tell someone if it requires certification and which nurse it should go to. this is a rule-based system, people, the rules should tell us. not that people don’t already know that. not that people aren’t already in the process of fixing that. i’m just impatient. and uppity. i want things done, and i want them done now, and i want them done right. ok, you know i’m reading these rules, and what i’m discovering is this very VERY disturbing trend: if you sit down and read the rules, they make sense. … well, for the most part. some of them are confusing, but overall, most of them make a fair amount of sense. what i’m saying is, i would have liked permission to stop taking calls for a couple hours so that i might familiarize myself with the rules of my own bloody job AT SOME POINT BEFORE I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO THAT JOB. yeah. this post brought to you by DOOO IIIT! .

Screnzy 09, Day 15 – Culinary Call Backs

as in checking up for information about the medical procedures of the employees of the culinary, food and commercial workers in las vegas, not as in telephoning your dinner. for most of you, the fact that i will be doing call backs, now, in an exclusive little culinary specialty group, will mean a) my work hours will be changing, b) a 50 cent/per hour raise, and probably c) nothing whatsoever. for the rest of you, thank you for your kind thoughts as we embark upon this long-overdue move. i get to work 2 – 8 daily now, which may seem like wtf to some of you, but for me and my super-evil class schedule in the coming quarters, these are the perfect hours. in other news, adam savage has a twitter. you know you want to. in still other news… … man i’m scatterbrained tonight. it’s probably all this WORK i’ve been doing. the bookblocks-to-be in that photo are set to become just some of twenty books i need to have done by saturday morning. so basically, by friday evening. nearly the entirety of my church choir will be headed out to various thrift shops this weekend as a social gathering/excuse to goof off type of thing (we’re episcopalians, its okay) and i’m making books for everybody, like a party favor. i’m sure i’ll have hideous demise photos of, say, my thumb, after they’re done. or my back. speaking of overdue, which, no, we haven’t been in a while, but oh well, did you ever notice how all my screnzy posts are about things other than screnzy? and now it’s time for cookies. no-bake oatmeal cookies. crack, in cookie form. (^_^) ,
