FACT 94 – The First Day

English 543, 20th Century British Literature, or I’m So Giddy About This Fancy New Computer System in my Classroom That I Shall be Treating You All Like Sixth Graders. i? am not a Class Participator. i? do not “do” group projects. i? also cannot stand james joyce. a portrait of the artist as a young man? makes me want to End It All. and of course we’re starting out with it. what i’d like to pick on at this particular moment, however, is the item featured in the photograph to the left. that? is an $80 piece of cardboard. my attitude towards this Cardstock Wallet-Raper was not aided by the NSYNC/Backstreet Boys/Savage Garden/insert-random-boy-band-here blaring out of the speakers mounted to the booths outside the transportation building (which the bus wanted me to know Is Bevis Hall!).  what is it? my OSU parking permit. for the right to park half an hour from my class and be rudely awoken two mornings a week by a newly En-cheered Bus, i pay $80 a year. why? well, mostly because i don’t have any choice, but also because the parking permit for the closer lot is like $200 per annum. and frankly, the fifteen minutes it would save me are JUST NOT WORTH IT.

also, do you recall my post concerning OSU’s shibboleth/password fail? well, apparently Teh New Site ain’t quite done with the whole Passing Out thing, because today i received an email telling me that OSU will soon be replacing our buckID (see that Clever Word Play there? yeah.) with actual numbers rather than our social security numbers, and directed us to the Buckeye Link, where we might be able to look up our fancy new numbers. the shot to your right reveals what greeted me upon my entrance to that page. now, i don’t know about the rest of you (and yes, that is Google Chrome. i’m a google whore.) but i’m pretty sure i don’t see no stinkin’ numbers in that box. is it perhaps one of those Spoiler Boxes, where you must highlight the text to see it? it is not (tried it). is it perhaps simply arguing with Chrome’s rendering devices? it is not (firefox was no better). is it perhaps that NO ONE AT OSU CAN CODE? it may well be. WE MAY NEVER KNOW!

(today’s Subtheme is Capitals!)

FACT 93 – MEAT! (meat!)

because the grocery store didn’t have any power either. (^_^)

(meat sales make me happy.)

also, i’m sure you’ve noticed the new digs. recently, i discovered the addiction of twitter, and so when i found the cool green leafy design they have, i decided i had to have one just like it. well, two days later (coding takes a long time when you’re stoopid), my blog, my twitter page AND my HP all match! GASP! i know, it is something of a miracle, and i’m certain it won’t last long, but i figure let’s pimp it while it’s up. well, it’s probably going to stay for a little while, anyway. this fall is shaping up to be uber busy, so i probably won’t have time to do another one at least until after the new year. class starts wednesday (no, i have not yet finished The Mysterious Bookbag), sarita emailed the other day to say she’d like a 007 day planner (if we ever end up hooking it up so she could show me what she wants, i could start it), plus douglas (our deacon at church) was asking about cards of some kind for “an event” he’s having in october. what kind of event? we have yet to discover, but he’s so cute, i pretty much don’t care. (^_^) not cute in the sense that i Like him, but he’s gay, and i have a weak point for homosexuals. what is it about homosexual couples that they’re allowed to be cute in a way that hetero couples just aren’t? please GOD don’t let anyone i know be reading this (… it’s on the PUBLIC internets, meredeth …) but there’s something about gay couples, guys especially, that i think to myself, AW! KYUTE~ frankly, even lesbian couples i would say are considered pretty much like hetero couples. it’s like instead of homophobia, i’ve swung around the other way. is it any better? it is not, but i suppose we could argue that at least it’s not hateful.
ANYHOW. i’m certain you did not come here today expecting a Serious Discussion of meredeth’s Peculiar Fetishes. i’m just happy i’m able to come off as Not A Dick in front of the man. he and russell are very sweet, there’s no need for them to know i’m Issued. we leave that knowledge, random internet people, to you. (^_^)
oh yeah! i know what else! i found a copy of King’s Field at BuyBack’s yesterday! the original one! for PSX! !!!
and now i can’t even FIND my playstation. i am sad now. (T_T)

FACT 92 – the slog

having survived the closest thing Ohio shall ever have to a hurricane, i can safely say that people who stayed behind in texas are Morons. i’m sorry, but when you’ve got the national weather service telling you that you should leave, that’s when you need to recognize that material possessions may or may not be replacable, but your life is certianly in the NOT column. get the hell out of dodge. the other thing it made me realize is that i’m glad i don’t live across the street. the entire other side of the street will apparently be w/out power for the rest of week. also, we’ve had dress down days at work all this week because half of our employees don’t have power. so, not all bad there. (^_^)

what is all bad is osu’s new site. they finally managed to fix the bloody thing, but i was trying to log on to pay my bill yesterday and their bloody password protocol was broken. they recently redid their site, and i get the idea that parts of it are randomly passing out. now if only the portion of their database that says i owe them ~$1300 would decide to delete itself. (T_T)
in other news, work continues of the fabled bookbag. i fear it may warrent a capital letter by the time it finally gets finished. turns out class doesn’t actually start till wednesday, which i suppose is a good thing, considering that leaves me two extra days to try and sew my fingers straight off. the problem is that the thing is huge. it’s 11 by 5 by 8, which sounds rather puny for a bookbag, but then you have to remember that EVERY INCH of the thing is covered in stitching. i’m basically creating a new fabric with a plastic substrate, and i’m doing it over 454 square inches of canvas. … okay, i just whipped out my calculator to figure that out, and i gotta tell you, i’m as shocked as you are at the largess of that number. no friggin wonder this thing is taking me so bloody long. (T_T)
speaking of things that seem never to end, i joined my brother on our first foray into the world of free MMORPGs, via something called asda story. well, frankly things were going alright (once i gave up trying to install it on my netbook and put it on my desktop instead) until we got to a certain point and ran out of quests. well, not completely, but there comes a point where you are required to be past your second job class before anyone else will even talk to you, and i was half a level short of being able to get that second job class. i had died a few times (each time stealing about 10% of  my exp) and so suddenly i had literally no choice but to level grid the (boring) old fashioned way if i wanted to be able to do any quests at all. so my party and i found a dun_eon with plenty of enemies (dungeon being a word flagged as inappropriate by the game’s expletive filter, a thing which probably warrents a whole seperate post) and set about slaughtering. the problem? well, the problems? a) there seemed to be about a 50% chance that one of us would be unable to target an enemy upon entering the dungeon. b) there seemed to be about a 50% chance that one of us would be unable to target our own party members upon entering the dungeon. c) once we could, all three of us, safely attack and safely heal, there turned out to be no point to doing these things, as killing the entire dungeon netted us only ~11% exp. in other words, we would have to complete the entire dungeon roughly 10 complete rotations in order to gain a level. given that one trip through the dungeon takes ~ 30 to 45 minutes, that would have been 5 hours for half a level. now, i know that there are people out there who will gladly level grind for days on end in order to beef up their characters, but a) i am not one of those people and b) the game was leaving me with no other choice, because there literally NO OTHER AVAILABLE QUESTS until i got my second job class. this? is the essence of poor design. i don’t know if the people who run the game are lazy? or poor game designers? or if they just came out of beta way waaay too early, but either way, i’m glad there’s nothing tying me down to that game. tomorrow night, my brother and his randomNPC cohorts shall act on an invitation they received from a game called La Tale, so hopefully they’ll have better luck with that one. the translation certainly is much better. i swear, i couldn’t even understand some of asda story’s quests, the translation was so bad. please, people! i know this is a free RPG, but i DO have some standards.
not that the game was all bad. before the lack of quests, it was super fun running around with my buddies and killing everything in sight, and the soulmate system is fairly original. certainly it added a whole new dimension to the party that made it more interesting. on the other hand, i do not have 10 hours a day to go about playing this game. NaNo IS soon upon us, you know. they send out their email the other day warning everyone of the impending forum revamp, and mercilessly teasing us with mentions of the cool new features they’ll have this year. actually, it’s great timing, because i just realized the other day what i will be writing for NaNo this year: Blessing the Troops. that’s right, again. the same story i did in 2006 (zomg really!? 2006!?) i will be writing again. this time? i’m actually planning. my goal this year is not simply to write 50,000 words in 30 days. my goal is to write 50,000 readable words. or at least 50,000 words that all relate to the plot. i’ve begun editing my original draft, and while a) it doesn’t suck even half as much as i remembered it sucking, b) the manuscript’s only half as big w/out padding. towards the end i got desperate and ended up putting in entire church services to fill my word count (it’s a semi-medieval britain setting, so it was appropriate at least) and now that i’m taking them out, i’m left w/ only like half as many pages. plus there were a bunch of scenes where i changed my mind about the whole plot motivation halfway through, and scenes where i’m like, yeah, i was super struggling w/ this relationship, and other scenes where i’m like, zomg this is uber trash. i’ve made a special book just for this story, and it gives me something to do during the 15 minutes in between calls at work, so at this point, i would say it looks like a good plan. we’ll see as we move toward the end of October if i still think trying to write a medieval british fantasy about loyalty and friendship with a self-deprecating cynical main character whilst simulataneously working 30 hours a week and attending a class on modern 20th century british literature is really a Good Idea.
yeah, we’ll see.

FACT 91 – mobiboc

because i really can’t be NERdy enough. i’m not sure how many of you are familiar with the ubiquitus (at least in Japan) QRcode, but they are another form of barcode, in this case, cell-phone readable. most every phone in japan comes with a QRcode decoder, which allows you to take a picture of a QRcode, such as is to the left, and resolve it into (usually) a URL, a site which you can then visit on the go. mobile traffic in japan is huge, much more so than here in the states, where the idea of being instantly wired into the vast intertubes hasn’t quite hit the national subconcious yet, but i understand that, shall we say, “housebroken” iPhones and various nokia phones currently have this capability. someone on etsy is currently selling patterns if you’d like to stitch your own, but if you’d much rather just get a finished product, drop me a line via today’s comment box, and i’ll whip one up for you. you’ll receive a completed needlepoint badge, about 2.5 inches square (~6.5 cm) ready to be sewn onto whatever you’d like. the materials don’t cost much, but between making the pattern and sewing them, they do take a good couple of hours, so they’ll be going for $10 per, that includes domestic (USA) shipping. for international orders, just let me know your country and i’ll email you a shipping quote.

incidentally, the one in the picture says http://www.notuboc.com and will soon be attached to the needlepoint bookbag i’m making. pictures of that to follow, i’m sure.

FACT 90 – great day in the mornin’ people!

i am victorious.

those of you expecting the remainder of this post to be about josh lyman, you shall be sorely disappointed.

those of you, however, expecting the remainder of this post to be about my new baby, shall be rewarded!

here she is next to The Behemouth, as i now call my original. i’ve been transferring over files for about six hours now, so it’s starting to feel like a real computer. IT’S JUST SO CUTE!!! … okay.

here follows my I’ve Owned it Six Hours review:

this shiny surface? waaay too shiny.

the white lines are my own doing, but you can see the UBER shiny-ness anyway. that’s my ikea lamp that hangs right above the desk that you see reflected there.

what are those little white lines for, you ask?

those creepy little orange and grey squares are vinyl squares, cut from larger vinyl squares, purchased at DickBlick’s down the road a bit. they are adhesive, and they are soon to be adhered to the shiny surface, w/in those little white lines. pics later.

oh yeah, i was kind of going to review it or something, huh. (^_^) well, the keyboard is plenty big for me (smallish hands, though, i guess), the fanciest application evar (keytweak) took swift care of the right shift/up arrow problem, the screen is really shockingly bright, and i even got audio-surf to play on it. i’ve got the windows 1000H, and i’m pretty much just biding time until ubuntu-eee comes out so i can install that thing. i have to keep at least a little windows, though, audio-surf doesn’t look so great w/ WINE. or rather, Wine.

so overall, lovely. the screen is going to take some getting used to (my old one was something like 14″ screen) but other than that, it’s perfect. i seriously can’t wait to whip it out in the middle of class and start taking some mad notes w/ this biotch! (^^;)

FACT 89 – maybe if i hit the refresh button ONE MORE TIME

we’ve all been there. you order your latest toy, that thing you’ve always wanted, that awesome piece of electronics that JUST came out and YOU CAN’T WAIT to get your hot little hands on it. so you order the thing. finally, you’ve bought it. you will be getting it. in the mail. after UPS ships it to you. so you get the tracking number, you go to see where it is…

and you spend the next five years hitting the refresh button. (T_T)

as if the UPS dude will psychically get your Eager waves and put the box on a truck that much faster. (X_X)

so you distract yourself. you watch the olympics, you make some books, you take a shower. you go to the grocery store. that one’s a good hour or so. well, the package has arrived in the right city, at least. your binding styles become progressively more complicated. you close the freaking browser window. you watch synchronized swimming. repeat AD NAUSEUM.

not that synchronized swimming isn’t awesome. not that i didn’t need a shower. in fact, not that i didn’t need groceries. all i’m saying is, CAN I JUST GET MY LAPTOP ALREADY!!!!!

FACT 88 – servant’s journal

see, i’m not dead. i’ve just been busy. busy doing what? well, guest books, mostly, but also this! (watch out, pictures are HUGENORMOUS)

for those of you who read a certain webcomic, at least if you’ve got a sharp eye out for all things No/gar, you may recognize this as Edgar’s servant’s journal. well, not exactly. his is a) lined, and b) entitled Edgar’s Journal, but c) i wanted it to be a little more product-y than that. although, i’d have to make a life-sized Edgar in order to use it properly. the one i have at the moment’s a little small:

FACT 87 – the standard…

… “i’m not dead” post.

good lord it’s been a while, hasn’t it. well, i’m not dead, i swear. … i’m undead! a. ha. ha. insert cymbol ring here. actually, i’ve been producing a fair number of goods, i just haven’t had time to write anything about it. in a way, i’m so alive, i hardly have time to live! a. ha. ha. lord, i’m sleepy. and i have class tomorrow.

OKAY! this isn’t being terribly coherent, so i’ll slap up some pictures, ask a few questions and move one with my life.

things i’ve been doing:

i’ve started a series of books that will all be bound in various none-glue-requiring styles. basically, they’ll all be done using only an awl, a needle, and some thread. also, they’re all going to have different styles of paper, all with those torn edges. “those torn edges” better know by people with more brain power than i have at this moment as deckled edges. so far, i like the light green one best, and frankly, that’s the one that’s taken me the longest so far. the blue one’s nice from a dorothy kind of perspective, but the green one looks like i actually have to have some skill to do it. anyhow, have some upclose looks at the pics above if you want more details. i left the pictures fairly huge (1000 px across) so you can have a good look.

so to close, i said i’d ask some questions and i will. why, in the name of all that is supposed to protect my processor from an untimely burnout death, did i have to look at the dA apophysis gallery? i’m just saying.

FACT 86 – On Upcycling and Oddities

hello, i’m meredeth, and i’m addicted to books. … oh wait. sorry. wrong meeting. … happens to me a lot. (^_^)

for a girl whose love of books began with tomes of the leather-bound, steampunk variety, stitching pages in between the cardboard remains of an old club cracker box may seem a tad unlikely, but to be entirely truthful, meredeth’s tastes have evolved from the merely odd into the fanasticly weird, and she now does things like dunking entire book blocks into pots of coffee under the auspices of the word “hobby.”

she recently discovered some of the many things you can do with the remains of a dr pepper box and her family’s apparently unquenchable sweet tooth has led to an over-abundance of candy boxes with which she can play.

this isn’t to say that she doesn’t do some traditional bindings as well just that she’s more likely to put even the most mundane of stitches to subversive use.

when she’s not binding, she likes to spend time in the pool, which may explain the prevelance of blue in her shop, and roaming around local office supply stores, which may have something to do with the creation of these. made with scrapbooking file folders and office printer paper, they are the perfect size for slipping in with that pile of copies you’re handing to your office mate. like passing notes in high school, only even better! (^_^) those who make a purchase in my shop today through june 6th (saturday) and mention this trunk show will get their names scrawled out by yours truly and dumped in something resembling a hat. on the 7th, i’ll pull one of the names out, and if i can decipher my own handwriting, i’ll be mailing these file folders out to the lucky winner. enjoy~
