FACT 108 – NaNo 07

no, you didn’t mis-read, and no, i didn’t mis-type. that says 07. for the past couple of years, lulu.com has been stepping up to the plate to offer all the winners free copies of their winning novels. last year, lulu didn’t do that, and this year, amazon’s little CreateSpace venture decided they’d step up and offer the free copies, both for this year’s winners AND last year’s winners. YAYS~ i’m also entering my 2008 effort in a contest over on textnovel, and since i have such a looming deadline for that one, i decided to finish editing my 2007 effort and submit that.

yeah.

well, i’ve just finished editing the thing, and i have to say, it’s a lovely feeling when you read something you’ve written some number of months ago, and you get to realize that it didn’t suck nearly as bad as you thought it did. (^_^) i’ll be posting some sample chapters here in a few moments, probably the King James version, and maybe the pig latin version, but i just wanted to say, NaNo ROCKS!

FACT 107 – PRESENTOS~

i’m pretty much on a role today. i was suppose to meet my friend for her book consult (^_^) this afternoon (yes, the one that i had to take a photo of the other day as she walked past – it’ll probably last longer) but that didn’t turn out to happen, so instead i wrapped christmas presents. the one to your left is carolyn’s present. the one below is for my other sister. guess what her name is…

the pink didn’t really come out, but her theme this year is PINK. i’d tell you what pink thing i got her, but she knows my blog-a-blog’s URL, so you’ll just have to sit in suspense. (^_^)

i also finished a whole huge batch of books for when my day of the BESTbook Salestravaganza comes along. i’ll be having a buy one/get one sale on my candy box books and other non-traditional books, so i’m stocking up. i’ve got a slew of books made from lindt chocolate bar wrappers and i just finished a trio of books made from chipotle menus (they’re Awesomeness by the by) and i’m going out to get a batch of mentos tomorrow for a new round of mento books. i’ve also got about a dozen other candy boxes sitting in my pending drawer (that’s right, drawer) waiting to be made, so i’ll be pretty stocked up. those mentos books are always a big hit, so i’m hoping to make out like a bandit. (^_^)

FACT 106 – PURDY COLOURS

wow, it’s almost like i’m a real blogger these days, huh? with real updates and everything!

moving on.

yesterday was my final for my horrible Modern(ist) Fiction class. i hesitate to broadcast how horrid this class was, firstly because i shall be revealing myself as the worst kind of literary snob (i.e., one who hates Literary Snobs) but also because the professor was pretty good. he brought us doughnuts on the last day of class, so that was nice. and he liked my midterm essay, so that made me happy, too (especially considering i was sooo half asleep when i wrote that thing) (… a state i have written many of my best essays in, as it turns out). the thing is, a) i HATE james joyce (with a serious serious passion), b) i cannot stand virginia woolf (seriously), and c) i had (seriously) no interest whatsoever in writing my final paper. and i’m sure it showed. i ended up writing about sexuality, mostly homo-, in modern literature, after i realized that pretty much every single book we read contained somebody who was gay, or who wanted to explore gayness, or the author was gay, or something. actually, it’s a subject that comes up a lot in the classes i take. i don’t know if a disproportionate number of (especially canon) authors are homosexual, or if i’m just that lucky to get the classes where the prof’s aren’t afraid to talk about that kind of thing (^_^) but i finally decided to write a paper on the fact. now, not that i’m not all about procrastination (and i do mean all about) but when you’re going to the library for the first time five days before your paper is due, that’s probably not a good sign. (^^;)

also, i don’t know if i’ve mentioned this already, but i’m doing a series of posts over at the BESTbooks blog, so you’ll want to head on over and check that out. trust me, it’s real mediocre stuff. heheh. no, actually, it’s been a super blast writing these posts. i get to drool over all sorts of awesome books, and marvel at the pathetically high level of education most of my fellow bookbinders have apparently put them through, and then i get to make some jokes about it while i tell everyone how awesome our members are. that’s our keyword for this month’s posts, by the by, i’ve decided. awesome.

also, i have managed to find a pair of headphones almost as wonderful as my beloved koss. now, when a product’s page starts out by touting its color matching with that nasty apple mp3 player (ew!) you can’t really expect that much, but (bitter) experience has taught me that the little air vents people put in really do help with sound, and these were only $10 at Staples (or schtaplehs, as i often call it) (don’t ask why) (no, seriously, don’t) so i decided to give them a go. i’m ditching my iPod shuffle, so i needed a new pair of those nasty in-ear deals (so i can listen to my muzaks illegally at work!). i generally prefer my (now out of print) koss kc … um 55? something like that, anyway, they don’t make them anymore, and i am uber sad about that (T_T) because they are Awesome. these, however, turn out not to be so bad. they are philips brand, little black ones, and they are remarkably comfy (at least for in ear designs). they’re not as responsive as my koss headphones, but they’re pretty nice. they’re perfect for work. great sound and tiny design.

FACT 105 – gun, with occasional music

well, blogosphere, it’s been a crappy day here in yatsu-land, but i’ve been attempting to compensate by doing what i do usually when i don’t want to or can’t trust myself to do anything else: i’ve been Solving Problems. actually, i’ve also been cleaning and reading the internets, and it is upon this last topic that i would like to first dissert.

i first heard about authonomy on the NaNo forums, and i sort of sidled over to check them out. i don’t know. i can’t quite get myself excited about things like this. i’m not a big social networker (i hardly even touch my facebook page, i just got a twitter account, like three weeks ago…) and i don’t go on forums, basically at all. i guess my problem is that given my relatively non-existant networking skills and my, frankly, loathing of protracted Discussions, i have what i would consider to be a chance roughly equivalent to that of suddenly being promoted from peon to CEO. of course it doesn’t help that i write generally fantasy and magical realism, the first genre being so reputed for having high crap/readable ratios and the second genre being so off-kilter that hardly anyone reads it. i certainly feel like i’d like to participate, i think i probably will end up putting some stuff up there, but i’ve noticed a certain, shall we say, indie streak in myself, and if you combine that with my suspicions of general popularity contests, i’m not really holding out a ton of hope. it seems like you’d need to have a fairly well established base of people who already either liked your work or who knew you AND who were willing to hop onto this site to rate your work, OR you’d have to spend a lot a lot of time on the forums building relationships and getting people to read your stuff and reading theirs in the blind hope that one of them might read your stuff back. … of course, i suppose it’s easy enough for me to say all this, from high atop my “i have a workshopping class next quarter and one again a few quarters after that” high horse.

topic number two, cleaning, is not really something i normally like to talk about, let alone do, but the fact is, i have a 1 GB iPod shuffle not doing anything, and i’d like to sell it, but i can’t find the box. i know i kept it (i keep all my packaging, i’m a FREAK) but it’s fairly small, and of course it’s clear, and of course i only have about FIVE TONS of other computer/gadget packaging lying about this place, so it’s not precisely the easiest find.

incidentally, i’m browsing through the fantasy section, and i’m starting to think i’m not even in the right section. does every other story really have to be about vampires? i mean, really?

topic number three, of course, was the one i started out talking about, and so it’s the one i shall end with, mostly because i like Solving Problems. i’ve been editing The Bells, my NaNo 08 effort, in an effort to get it out in time to be considered for the textnovel contest. i think i mentioned that already. anyhow, i’ve started off by solidifying the plot, an action that desperately needed actioned, as i wrote the thing sans outline, sans idea, indeed sans any plan of any kind. i’ve been using this program called FreeMind … um … hold on, let me find the link … ah, here we go. FreeMind. it’s like those diagrams with circles and lines and stuff that you used to do in high school, or that maybe you still do in preperation for boring business presentations. at first i was like, yeah right. but of course now, i’m fairly hooked. i like the ability to add nodes wherever i want, i like the ability to move them around, i really really like the ability to export as about fifty bazillion different things, not the least of which is the jpg you see to your left. (^_^)

did i have a point today? meh.

(today’s post brought to you by of course, of course)

FACT 104 – NaNo RECAP

well, folks, it’s about that time of year again, that time when meredeth has exhausted the joys of rediscovering the shower, when meredeth has gotten over the thrill of non-microwaved dinners, when meredeth is done watching every movie she wanted to watch during November but couldn’t. in other words, that time when meredeth starts to miss writing.

so i’m editing. (^_^)

this actually has two purposes. a, it keeps me acquainted with a work that really shouldn’t have existed in the first place, and b, it may help me win a contest! as for a, those of you who witness the horror of satan’s introductory video will no doubt remember my original plan of novelizing Samurai Jack. well, as per the NaNo norm, i ended up completely changing my mind about half an hour into day one, through out all my hard pre-writing work, and moved on with a short story idea that had been chilling in my files for some number of years. well, that short story actually went on for 51919 words, so i think it falls firmly outside the realm of short story now. the ironic thing is that this is the first time i’ve actually done all of NaNo on one story, AND w/out padding. i actually wrote, and i didn’t pad. actually, i didn’t pad at all. i started out thinking, i have absolutely no hope of winning, so if i end up writing a couple of short stories, i can call myself a success, but instead i end up writing the whole thing on one actual story. i? am flabbergasted. this story? shouldn’t even exist. i wasn’t even going to write it, and then it was going to be a short story, and then, while i wasn’t looking, it went and turned into a novel. (^_^)

as for the contest, i think i probably haven’t got much of a chance of finishing my editing by the dec 31er deadline, let alone winning the thing, but then again, i figured this was going to be the year i failed at NaNo. so i’m sucking it up and embarking upon my first serious editing job. now, of course, i’ve “edited” before, but this has usually been for workshopping classes, or for deviantART presentability, perhaps not the most stringent standards in the world, shall we say. this time i’m out to win a contest. as you can see, i’m having a wonderful start of it…

NaNo 08 – FIN!

that’s right ladies and gentlemen, your beloved writer passed into that glorious land known as winnersvillle late last night. 50083 words flashed up on the screen and giant pictures of viking ships sailed forth. but, alas, the job was not quite finished. no, wonderful audience, the story was not yet finished, the conclusion had yet to be written.

so i wrote the damn thing. lord, this high style is exhausting, and i really don’t have time for it. i’ve got a paper to write, i’ve got this story to edit, i have at least two short stories to write up for next quarter, AND i’ve got some twenty four blog entries to write up for the BESTbooks blog. not to even mention the craft projects i’ve got going on. and the fact that i have yet to really do any research for this paper WHICH IS DUE WEDNESDAY. so for the moment, i’m off to the library.

i just wanted to brag about finishing. finally. and with the same plot that i started off with way back on the first.

NaNo 08 – THANKSGIVING EDITION

now that the day is winding down, i would like to point out the things i am thankful for.

error messages:

bad translation jobs:

database read errors:

for those of you who can’t read japanese, the gackt sponsorship screenie is supposed to read “Brand Message” and for those of you unfamiliar with the total girth of my twitter updates, i had made some 139 updates as of the time of that screenshot.

the thing i am not thankful for? being 1637 words behind and three days from the end… i have basically two days to write 6628 words. CHRIST! I BETTER GET WRITING!

NaNo 08 – DAY TWENTY

well, technically, it’s six minutes into day twenty-two, but i’ve just written 2800+ words in just under two hours, and i’m feeling pretty high about it, or at least, i’m feeling pretty high, so we’re just going to call it day twenty. i was super sick last night, to the point where i went through about half a box of tissues is just a couple of hours. my nose? is still red. i only wrote 500 words last night. i was, as of this morning, 5400+ words behind. as of the twentieth? i’m just 2077 words behind. my fingers? are totally about to fall off.

the odd thing that’s happening to me during this year’s nano is that i keep — well, to be perfectly frank, i keep killing off all my main character’s friends, but what i was going to talk about is that i keep discovering things about the future of my plot as i’m writing it. now, i am not an outliner, but i’ll usually have a vague idea of the ending before i start. indeed, i often have the ending in mind before i know what the beginning is. i certainly know where i want it to end up this time. actually, i’ve written half that scene already. but i usually have at least some vague idea about what’s going to happen in the middle. this year? hell no. i had a beginning i’d already written (that got completely redone), i had no bleeding idea about the middle (which might explain this Odd Thing), and i had a seriously firm idea about the ending. … or so i thought. a couple days ago, i was driving around with my mom, thinking about my story, and i suddenly realized a hideously horrible thing that will happen to my poor beleagured main character as a direct result of his actions in the ending i had already been envisioning. while i was writing today’s flaming word count (^_^) i kept having revelation after revelation about who’s dying, how, when, what poor reiki is going to do about when it happens. i actually had to go back and fill in some sections after i’d already written what is now essentially the story’s future, because i got to a certain point, and i realized, oh! this, this and that has to happen so that when we actually do get to this point for real, reiki’s already been traumatized, and is, to say the least, vehemently against losing another friend.

can i just say, at this point, I LOVE WRITING! keeeee~

today’s sponser? probably oxygen highs. choir this evening was a serious breathing workout, and no joke.

NaNo 08 – DAY SEVENTEEN

let me tell you how my week has been going so far…

yeah, pretty much. that is, or rather, that used to be, my wheel rim. i swear, these cars these days, you drive over one honkin big curb at speeds, you know, of a certian speed, so to speak, and they just bend right out of shape. (^^;) just coz i didn’t know which driveway i was supposed to be going in to… all humor aside, i am pretty well fucked now, because i still owe the great and wonderful wizard that is The Ohio State University about six hundred dollars. and i just read that gordon gee, the head wizard himself, is the highest-paid state university president in the country. i thought, bullshit. there’s no bowtie in the world worth that kind of money. maybe if we stopped paying our damn presidents more than they need and start reducing tuition a little bit, we might improve things that are worth improving instead of insuring that mrs. gee has the fanciest drapes money can possibly buy.

but all is not doom and gloom here in the yatsu household, nay nay, far from it. i am on vacation this week, all week, thank you PTO. also, i wrote an unbelievable amount of words last night. i wrote almost three thousand words in just under two hours. i was like, jesus, no wonder i’m so bleeding tired. the story, of course, needs a little work… okay, it needs, like, a ton of work, but the point is that i am writing. did i perhaps change the profession of the main character a quarter of the way through, only to change it back a couple of thousand words later? perhaps i did. is the ending clear to me in any way whatsoever? it is not, and may never be. has my plot suddenly turned into a homosexual love triangle with one lone girl hanging out in the wings waiting to step in and save the whole world while my bisexual lead obstinantly refuses to believe that he has any part whatsoever to play in this drama, let alone the most important part? like anyone here hasn’t had that happen to them before. so, i will continue writing. why? well, like everything else in this life, the answer is threefold. a) i’m a writer, b) i have no interest in writing my essay, and c) i have a week’s vacation.

see you on the other side of 25k!

(this week, our sponser is, The Comma!)

NaNo 08 – DAY SEVEN

well, i haven’t been keeping up with my blogging, but i haven’t exactly been keeping up with my writing, either. (^^;) i’m about a day and a half behind on writing. what i do have, however, is a fancy new pen! here is is closed:

and here she is open:

it’s a Tasche pen made by Ohto Japan. it’s only like five or six inches closed, and it’s full length when it’s open. it’s so awesome! it’s got a really nice semi-broad nib and it writes like a charm. my poor parker vector is so old, it’s leaking pretty seriously, so i’m looking around for a replacement. i don’t think anything is really going to replace that dear thing completely, but this one’s not bad at all.
